I worked along the same lines, until a few friends and their art inspired me to try harder. Hence my more recent work.
Actually, I use printer paper, or a 30"x36" white sketch tablet (I call it a tablet, but I'm not sure what it actually is). A lot of my stuff looks gray because I don't have a scanner, and use a digital camera instead. The lighting seems to effect the exposure differently each time, usually giving the grayish appearance. Some of them even turn up somewhat yellowish, though I'm not sure why. Another thing to keep in mind, is that smudging is my usual shading technique, and can also make an image look gray. Personally, I believe it's a culmination of all these facters. Although, I'm now interested in this gray paper myself...

I've seen some classical works (Da Vinci and the like) that were done on gray paper. they used black and white pencils (charcoal probably) and they were really good (but this is Da Vinci were talking about) I have no idea where to find it though. and I've looked.
